does anyone here tie flys?...

I was just wondering. Sense I can't see them can we at least talk about them? Whats your target (trout, pike, shark, earlobe), how long have you been tying? Do you use books or go by the seat of your pants?

You can do it... come on flymandan, ypsifly, flyman*, and others chime in... or at least tell me to shut up.

ugly @$$ flies.....they WORK!

Yea, thats right Zonk-o. My ugly flies catch fish, somehow

I'm quite proud to have inspired someone to start tying. For me it was a matter of realizing that I could tie a fly for less than 15 cents as opposed to buying one for $1.50-$2.00. They all get snagged the same

How bout that Sucker Spawn fly I sent ya? Ugly as sin, wasn't it?
But how PRETTY was that steelie(oswego) ya got with it?!?!?!?!?!
Wish I could land one on that pattern. I must have tied 200 by now

Next season we can get another steelhead pattern thread going. How bout it?

*no books, no classes or class for that matter.....tie it up, chuck it out I think I spent 15 bucks on my vise

Tie flys, Build custom flyrods, etc, etc, etc.

Mostly I tie for trout, some Classic fully dressed salmon flies, some bass, occationally for saltwater.

I have been tying for almost 10 years. Flyfishing for over 25. I was taught to tie by a professor of mine that has been tying for over 50 yrs. We became fast friends and still fish together occationally. While I don't find time to tie as often as I would like I still have several hundred flies. My friend has several thousand. (He has suitcases full of flyboxes and Closets full of materials.) In my opinion the best way to learn is with someone to show you.

My favorite books are The Best One Thousand, and Flytiers Masterclass.

Someday I will get some digital pics done of some of my flys and post them.

I have been tying for two and a half years.

I target just about everything with flies. Chinook, Browns, Rainbows, Brookies, Steelhead, Bass, Walleye, Panfish, and even Carp.

My biggest source of info has come from the fly tying class that my fishing club has every month. I also read books and magazines, as well as some of the tying related web sites.

Of course the best is when you "fly by the seat of your pants". Experimentation has led to some productive flies.

Wink tying videos

i've taped some tying shows off the sports channels and used these and books to start.
starter books will give some basic techniques, and the videos will show them in use.
after that just start tying. i use catalogs for patterns to look at and you have to realize that a lot of material will trade out.
if you are after trout i will say spend the money on good materials for your dry flies as cheap materials lose performance rapidly or don't float at all

Cool Me Too...

I'd tied years ago and recently have dug all of the stuff out to begin again. This, for two reasons. 1. Last summer I had a truly inspired experience floating the Blackfoot with aGuide near Missoula, MT. 2. I figure it is something I can do with my 5-year old son (soon to be 6). I've tied from a book, though I also enjoy those "ugly" self concocted recipies you guys mentioned.

I've seen some really nice saltwater flies in Florida. The Walmart in PC Beach sells a variety that a local makes and they are of excellent quality. Every now and then you'll see a Lady near the Pier selling her Pompano flies, and they are very well made too. badcuda

been at the vice for 5 yrs or so... pretty much self taught with the help of some "dummy" books. i think i have it down pretty good now, with 75% of my patters tied for steelhead and salmon. starting to get my fingers wet with tying smaller dries now... tied up a few for a friend of mine.. he never did get the ones i originally made for him.. shhhhh! classic salmon flies are next on the agenda along with rod building. i better get a high paying job soon!
