Angry Here's one...

In Canada we don't catch pike on purpose. Here's one that my girlfriend caught while fishing for Brookies. 6 lb. test, no leader on a 2 inch firetiger countdown Rapala. It was 41 inches long. Boy was she mad when she saw this thing on the end of her line!!!

second favorite?

Hey Spinner, you said Pike are your second favorite fish. Is that to Browns or just trout in general?
I hate pike. I've never released one and probably never will...completely ruin trout populations.

Angry I disagree..

Many many times have I caught Brook Trout and Pike out of the same pool in a river or off of the same shoal in a lake. These fish have co-habitated in these waterbodies that I am referring to for centuries. To kill a fish for any other reason than to eat it is irresponsible and wasteful. I hate Pike too but all of mine get released unharmed.

Wink I lived 33 steps from the Kickapoo River

Northerns were my first fish of choice...

Until about 1981.....

I fished for pike daily as a child...

I eat every animal or fish I harvest....

Something about those teeth.......

Brown trout are my favorite...

They are the only trout I really target...

I catch a few brookies...But only by accident...

about the pike

I understand what you're saying Dan, but if you were in my situation I'm sure you would think differently. I am lucky enough to have a cabin on a lake that USED to be incredible fishing. Trolling for salmon would produce at least 10 fish in an hour and occasionally we would catch very nice trout doing this. Fly fishing was awesome anywhere on the lake. It was a given that on any evening you could catch anywhere from 5-10 trout off the end of our dock with dry flies. These were cutthroats and rainbows anywhere from 12 to over 20 inches. Underneath every dock was a nice largemouth bass or two. Even little kids had it made fishing with worms and bobbers...I'm not lying you could catch fish as fast you could cast and reel. This kind of fishing was the same all along a chain of about 10 lakes. But of course someone from God knows where thinking God knows what illegally introduced northerns into the river system. Now they have completely taken over. Although pike and trout may cohabitate the areas you spoke of, they certainly don't here. I haven't caught a salmon for at least 5 years (which reminds me the fall salmon runs used to be incredible). And I honestly can't remember the last trout I caught there, its been a long time. So I guess that is why I am not so fond of pike...now that lake is only good for pike fishing, most of which is done with spears.

More Pike chat...

Actually I don't live too far from Wisconsin Len. Been there many times in my younger days when I used to visit the Duluth/Superior area for "recreation". Ever been to "The Cove"??? lol We'll see what we can do to exchange visits. Here's about the only pic I have with me and a Pike. It was caught the same day and under the same circumstances as the previous pic of my gf.

Pike from long ago

I caught this one in Ontario, Canada in 1983. I was
14 YRS. old. We stayed at Woman River Camp. The owner
of this camp told us of a portage lake up there. We brought a
canoe so we decided to try this lake out. We had fished it a few times and one evening when Dad and I were fishing he hit my Dad's lure. He fought him for a about a minute and he got away.
We had no idea how big the pike was. We just knew it was big.
Dad then gave his lure to me for a go at it. Nice of Dad to do that.
Well it wasn't long and he hit it again. Fought him for a good while and I was finally able to get his head out of the water for a look at him. My dads eyes got real big when he saw it. We neted him and fished a little longer but I was ready to go back. No need to keep fishing when you've caught the big one for the week. We got back to camp and everyone was suprised to see what I had caught. It was 36" long and weighted 10 pounds. It was a trip I will never forget. Its been 20 years since we have been up there but I hope to go up again in 2004.
