about the pike
I understand what you're saying Dan, but if you were in my situation I'm sure you would think differently. I am lucky enough to have a cabin on a lake that USED to be incredible fishing. Trolling for salmon would produce at least 10 fish in an hour and occasionally we would catch very nice trout doing this. Fly fishing was awesome anywhere on the lake. It was a given that on any evening you could catch anywhere from 5-10 trout off the end of our dock with dry flies. These were cutthroats and rainbows anywhere from 12 to over 20 inches. Underneath every dock was a nice largemouth bass or two. Even little kids had it made fishing with worms and bobbers...I'm not lying you could catch fish as fast you could cast and reel. This kind of fishing was the same all along a chain of about 10 lakes. But of course someone from God knows where thinking God knows what illegally introduced northerns into the river system. Now they have completely taken over. Although pike and trout may cohabitate the areas you spoke of, they certainly don't here. I haven't caught a salmon for at least 5 years (which reminds me the fall salmon runs used to be incredible). And I honestly can't remember the last trout I caught there, its been a long time. So I guess that is why I am not so fond of pike...now that lake is only good for pike fishing, most of which is done with spears.
