Idiocracy or fun?

I have heard on the East Coast that during a certain time of the year, huge Bluefin Tuna in the 300lb plus make a run. I think it may be near the Carolinas or Virginia??

These guys take a charter boat out and go after these monsters in standup gear. Several of them have been pulled overboard.

Anybody hear of this?

Yep!

amberjack,

I have heard of them catching fish larger than that , but up the coast. New York, I think.

I did here of a story maybe two years ago of a "wire man" being snatched out of a big sport fishing boat by a big marlin. One guy jumped in after him. The line had broke and he seen the guy disapear into the depths. Still attached to the fish via the leader. To my knowledge he was never seen again.

I've caught tuna in the 300 lb class off of Md and Va and my biggest one was 650 on the Grand Banks Newfoundland. I know quite a number of Tuna Charter Captains and never heard of anyone going overboard because they were pulled overboard.

One guy told me once that a guy went overboard cause he was a little tipsy and slipped on the wet deck but he was easily retrieved. I'll ask around and get back with ya.

AmberJack... I'll write up the story of my big'un and put it here after the holiday. I'm going to be gone (unfortunately not fishing) until next wednesday. It was pretty cool though... not real exciting just a 6 hour battle.... LOL....

Everyone Have a Safe and Happy Holiday and I'll be talking to you next week.....

North Carolina has a few Captains that target the big Bluefins. It's still a mystery why they appeared. I think its been going on off the Outer Banks for several years now. badcuda

Exclamation Stand-up fight

Aloha from Kona.

I saw a guy on one of the late night talk shows. He holds the record for the biggest fish caught on stand-up tackle. It was a bluefin tuna just under 1000 lbs. In the interview he talked about being pulled overboard durring a fight with a yellowfin tuna. He loosened the drag and was pulled back on board by the crew. Still strapped to the rod! He landed the fish too

I don't chat too much on fishing bulletin boards. I'm more of a reader. Had to get in on this one though. Would you guys mind if I posted my monthly fishing report here???

fishing report

Never mind about posting my fishing report here....duh....I found the fishing reports board.

More on stand-up........

I do a lot of stand-up fighting. I use modified Penn 30 internationals with 100 lb. braided line. I've caught and released several big fish up to about 600 lbs. A few months back, I even tied into a 1000+ lb. thresher shark but couldn't get it to the boat. Finally broke main line. With the proper rod, reel, harness and technique, a stand-up fight is the best!

Smile Hello Capt Jeff...

...and welcome to Anglerschat! Many of us love to hear good fishing stories and I agree, stand up is an exciting way to fight a fish. I caught and released my first Sail in Cancun last April (record class fish). I wasn't interested in killing the fish, as I mostly go for game fish that I find good table fare. I was a professional Taxidermist for years and now I find no one even makes a blank large enough to replicate my Sail...oh well, at least she's still swimming off the Yucatan! Look forward to your posts. Good fishing, badcuda
