Mirror Lure makes a lipped diving bait that is around 10" long called the "Purple Demon". I have one in the spread anytime I am probing for wahoo. The opposite flat line will have a hot pink Mirror Lure.

Talking Marauder

Captn C,

In Cabo, most everyone has a HUGE purple Marauder for the Chew Dawgs. Orange or other colors work too , but purple is the best. Big purple Marlin lures too!

One of the most successful Wahoo fishermen down there years ago, used Florida (flow in) horse ballyhoo on a special spreader bar of his own design. He trolled them Very fast!

BTW the 202 pounder submitted for a record didn't make it. Haven't seen the reasons for rejection, but would guess it had something to do with the scale used. Often the scales at the docks (used for the touristas pictures) weigh a "little on the heavy side."

Thanks guys, I just want a Wahoo over 100 lbs I've had good success with the Yo-zuri Bonita lure, in Dolphin color. The Blackfin Tuna won't leave the purple/black alone. badcuda

Over a 100# is a big one! My record is 73#. That bad boy took a green machine while trolling for tuna, marlin, etc. He now resides on my wall.

wahooooooo hmmm, well I haven't caught many big ones over 60lbs but here's what I like.

For the purist:
1)Pink Stretch 30
2)Purple Rapala Magnum
3)Yo-zuri or Braid Marauder (bonita lure, yo zuri comes with better swivels than braid) in the orange/black and purple/black colors

For the baiters:
1)Islander sailure/ballyhoo
2)Carolina witch/ballyhoo with 20oz trolling sinker
3)LIVE BAIT, not sure where you are fishing but here in tx blue runners are good big wahoo baits bump trolled on blue to blue green rips or near mooring buoys.

Location is probably the key,I'd like to spend a week or so in St. Thomas trying to bag a 80+lb hoo.....they like to high speed troll with ballyhoo and those big spinner bait things from what I heard.

Thumbs up

My friends that target big Wahoo in the Gulf prefer BIG live Bonita, rigged with large treble hooks. They keep them alive in Bonita tubes until ready to start trolling. Similar to trolling Marlin live bait rigs. I am told that the big Wahoo like to blow them out of the water. Sounds like a rush to me. But I'm still in the 25# club, so any Wahoo is cool to me..lol. Thanks for the advice guys, I'll add some of your favorites to my box. My next trip isn't until late April. Good fishing, badcuda

Whats up fellas? Glad to see the board up and running. As for Wahoo baits. On the planer rod: a #4 8 oz planer along with a purple/black tracker and a big ole hoo is hard to beat. Seems like some days they'll want darker colors and some days they want brighter colors up top. When thy're thick though it doesn't matter a whole lot.

big wahoo tricks

i am now 20 yrs old and live in Trinidad, to date my largest wahoo is a 100 pound monster last year. i have also caught about 5 of them in the 70 pound size. My ultimate favourite baits for wahoo are a WHite sea witch with a huge ballyhoo on my 50W with 80 pound wire line. Another favourite bait of mine is the ilander blue fading into pink on the down riger with a ballyhoo or flyin fish at 100ft. on my other rods i fish a blue an white ilander on the next down rigger at 65ft. an ilander SEA STAR on the long rigger and a large pink black tiger stripe yo zuri skirt with ballyhoo on the short rigger. we troll between 6.5 an 7 knots

I have three lures that I rig for Hoo's

1. a very old Hatteras lure (12 oz) rigged with red and black skirts. rigged on the
shot gun ( I think I will cry when I finally lose this one)

2. a purple and black wahoo whacker with horse ballyhoo behind a planer

3. and now the Braid wahoo bombs!!!

for some reason wahoo wackers and bombs don t seem to be productive in trinidad. most people prefer fishing fresh baits. However if traveling long distances some people may set 2 of them out as high speed lures

I use many different types of darker colored baits. But I must say my favorite the the Braid Marauder in Purple and Black. Its the American Express card, I never leave home without it. LOL

My second favorite is the Bluewater Eagle. Its just a mean looking lure that will catch BIG Hoos. Its got a 32 oz. Chrome over brass head.

Talking

In Bermuda ,we use dark colored sea witches AND ISLANDERS.
I find the lighter colors are not that effectives for the hoos.
Plugs are popular with purple/black,red/black sea bozs, rapalas and
braids leading the way.
when the hoos are running from october to may they will eat anything that
gets in their way.
we ran out ballyhoo last time and just used sea wtches.
they still hit them.
