Ever catch a Goliath Grouper (Jewfish)

Although it is presently illegal to keep a "Goliath Grouper" (formerly known as a Jewfish) caught in US Waters, has anyone ever:

1. Caught one before it was illegal?

2. Caught and had to release a now illegal one?

3. How big (est)?

From what I have been able determine, they are on their way back in US Waters, after having been devastated. Anyone have any definitive info on them?

2. no
3. 0lbs

But that name........Goliath Grouper ?!?!?!?
Sounds like an idea of the Clinton/Gore group. I don't know why they called it a jewfish, but why not?

I am am white and don't want to change the name of "Whiting" or any other fish.

People need to fish more and monkey with things less.

Smile Jewfish

I have never seen one caught , but aI saw and ate some of one back in the early 60's. As I recall it was caught on a handline near the Port Aransas Jetty. I don't remember much about the taste, I was about 15 , but the fish was huge.

My Mother caught a leviathan when she was 16. Don't remember the exact weight, but it was over 400 lbs. Their boat was due in at 5pm and didn't return until past 8pm. The Coast Guard had been alerted and were looking for them. I've lost Group's I never got a peek at, but boated two Warsaw's back to back on a two day trip out of Panama City in 1973: 70 lbs and 53 lbs. A guy on the port bow landed a 145 pounder. All 3 were taken off the same spot. Good fishing, badcuda
