Bait prefrence

Well as for as I can say from personal observations is here in Central Texas Live bluegill seem to be their choice, next would probably be large live shad although sometimes more difficult to catch and keep alive, then again I've seen a man catch a 36 pounder crappie fishing with a minnow for bait pull up a 1 pound plus crappie and and have a flathead come up and grab it while he was trying to net it , he wound up netting em both.

You might get lots of responses regarding the best flathead bait.

Flathead will eat any live fish they can catch and fit in their mouth. Nature is sometimes harsh and catfish are not afforded the luxury of choosing their meal.

But by observing their most abundant food sources we may be able to use the baits they prey on most often. Flathead obtain their meals with stealth and concealment. They do not possess speed and agility to outmanuver baitfish. Small carp and panfish are slower fish that live shallow in submerged timber that can be used for ambush.

Goldfish are an excellent choice because of their strength and endurance. They remain active and present an image of a small carp. They are easy to maintain and durable after being hooked.

Slipping any lively baitfish into the Scioto river can produce large flathead.
Finding good access to prime angling spots gets more difficult every year.

I hope you keep searching and find many trophy cats along the way.

As long as it is a natural food and alive, it will be good.

I've fished'em for over 50 yrs in LA & MS using goldfish and everything else but if you can get these little Sunfish ... give'em a try. They'll stay alive over a week on a set line and a Tabby will not pass one up, they are the only bait i'll ever use again. You should be able to get'em in your area if the law dosen't prohibit using them there. Some states do.

Re: best bait for shovelheads(flatheads)

Red is correct. Flathead rarely turn down lively baits and bluegill and rockbass are great. Any gill with red eyes will be livelier and last longer than other bluegill.

I normally go to goldfish when water temperature rises and oxygen content prevents my bluegill from living all night on the hook. Last year our lakes never stratified and I was able to use bluegill all summer as bait.

Re: best bait for shovelheads(flatheads)

Ihave caught several over 40lb mark and some even bigger on Blue gill or sun perchabout as long as your pinky finger and make sure they are alive.I hook them in the dorsal fin or through the lips and let them rip...

best bait for shovelheadsflatheads

If you have a cast net, I would go with shad first. If you cant catch any shad, then shrimp. Dip bait has also worked well for me in Conroe. Good Luck
